She earned the nickname "Flicka" during her childhood. Von Stade studied at Mannes College the New School for Music in New York City, and she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1970. The following year, she performed as Cherubino in "Le nozze di Figaro" at the Santa Fe Opera.
